MLR Week 10 Wrap-Up: Scores & Stats

Toronto Arrows 64- 31 Utah Warriors

In their final away game of the season, the Toronto Arrows exploded for a 64-31 win over the Utah Warriors on Saturday afternoon.

The Arrows (4-4) used nine tries from nine different players to down the Warriors (1-5-1) and smash the record for most points scored in a Major League Rugby match. Arrows’ fly-half Sam Malcolm led all scorers with 19 points on eight conversions and one penalty goal.

Utah picked up a valuable bonus point in the loss but remain in eighth place in the league table with nine points on the season. Toronto’s picked up four points in the win and an additional bonus point for scoring four tries in the match to earn 22 points in the league table. Despite grabbing a handful of points, the Arrows remain in sixth place at the conclusion of Week 10.

The Warriors will welcome the Seattle Seawolves to town on Friday, April 5 while the Toronto Arrows will welcome the NOLA Gold (6-2) to town on Sunday, April 7 for their first-ever home match after eight long weeks on the road.

NOLA Gold 33 – 34 Glendale Raptors

The NOLA Gold did everything they could to steal a win at Inifity Park but it was a late penalty goal that propelled the Glendale Raptors to a 34-33 win on Saturday night.

The Gold (6-2) scored two tries in the match’s final 10 minutes to take a 33-31 lead into stoppage time before conceding a kickable penalty deep in their own territory. Robbie Petzer’s penalty kick in the 83rd minutes sealed the victory for the Raptors (4-3-2). Glendale fly-half Will Magie led all scorers with nine points.

The two bonus points that NOLA picked up in the last-minute loss proved to be extremely valuable because it bumped them up to 33 points and allowed them to reclaim their spot atop the league table that they lost to RUNY earlier in the day. Glendale’s five points gives them 28 total points on the season and leave them in third place.

Glendale will welcome the Houston SaberCats (2-5) to Infinity Park on Saturday, April 6 while NOLA will travel to Toronto to take on the Arrows (4-4) on Sunday, April 7.

San Diego Legion 28 – 22 Seattle Seawolves

The San Diego Legion went into Starfire Stadium and left with a 28-22 victory over the Seattle Seawolves on Sunday evening.

Despite losing both the possession battle, territory battle, and conceding more tries, San Diego (5-2-1) jumped at every opportunity they had to score points and the boot of Fly-half Joe Pietersen ultimately proved to be the difference. Pietersen hit three penalty goals and two conversions to help make sure the Legion left with a win over the Seawolves (5-3). Pietersen’s 13 points led all scorers in the match.

The four points that the Legion picked up in the victory give them 26 on the season and leave them in fifth place in the league table. The Seawolves picked up two valuable bonus points in the loss and maintain a one-point lead over the Legion for fourth place.

Seattle will travel to Utah to take on the Warriors (1-5-1) on Friday, April 5 while the Legion will welcome Austin Elite Rugby (0-9) to town on Sunday, April 7.
